Clifford was trained at St Martin's and Camberwell Schools of Art London.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1984 and was head of graphic design degree courses at Maidstone College of Art for​ twenty years.

He has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Bankside Gallery in London. Clifford has also been a winner of the prestigious annual Singer Friedlander/Sunday Times national Watercolour competition.

Clifford now lives in Australia but spends the summer months in Britain.
